Travel Predicaments

Arrival Plans Logo

Travelling is not just filled with meaningful and amazing  experiences 24/7. In fact, it is it comes with unpredictability that often cannot be ignored. What may seem like an enviable lifestyle is actually riddled with worry, burnout, and even unfortunate events. With that in mind, we are going to explore some travel predicaments you may find yourself in, and why they should not stop you from seeing the world.

1

Travel anxiety

Travelling anywhere can put you through some stress-inducing situations. From feeling unsafe and on guard in a new place, to being lost, and navigating through a hectic area. The journey itself can make anyone anxious if you are alone or in an unfamiliar place. That said, any worry and anxiety can be minimized with a plan and/or focus on the end goal. In many cases, you will be outside of your comfort zone but it will only strengthen your resourcefulness and problem-solving skills (It’s true, travel is good for you!). Do not let anxiety stop you from exploring because 99% of the time the destination is worth it.

Travel Tip: Do not be afraid to ask for help.

2

Homesickness

Emotional distress can happen when you are in an unfamiliar environment and away from your most comfortable place, home. That said, the feeling might happen when you least expect it. Particularly when you are adjusting to new things around you like a different bed, food, and customs. Some things are so different that you start to miss what home feels like. Note that particular travel predicaments like homesickness are mostly felt on your first trip or on long-term vacations, but it will get easier. In the end, you develop a greater appreciation and understanding of the world around you.

3

Culture shock

If you are heading to a place that is worlds away from home then you are probably going to experience a culture shock. In this case, the unfamiliar surroundings and experiences might leave you feeling confused, uncomfortable, and anxious. It might hit you all at once when you are forced to adjust to the new smells, sights, language, and behaviours. To be honest, the only way to adapt is to embrace, so go with it and try to learn and enjoy along the way. Undoubtedly, the experience will leave you more open and flexible as a person.

4

Getting screwed over

Needless to say, nobody wants to be scammed and taken advantage of. But, there is a good chance that it will happen to you anywhere, which is a huge problem with travelling. Without a doubt, taxi drivers can be the worst offenders so it is always best to travel with a reputable business. As a tourist you will be targeted, and scammers are good at what they do so be ready to make a deal, haggle, or say no. In fact, haggling is a part of many cultures, especially when buying from vendors. Either way, if you feel like you are being scammed then walk away and do not be afraid to say no.

Travel Tip: Research typical costs beforehand.

5

Exhaustion

Yes, travel can suck and it feels worse if you are overly tired and completely drained. Of course, the increased activity and carrying of bags are the main reasons for exhaustion. Also, jet lag, delays, and long journeys can make for dreadful travels too. Unless you are just hanging out by the beach, which at this point sounds ideal, a lot can bring on heavy exhaustion. However many of us want more than that, which is why it’s important to go at your own pace. Most importantly, do not over-schedule your travels and relax when it is time to relax.

We cannot expect to have a perfect, glamorous vacation, because as with life, travel is about balance. Even though there may be a dark side of travel, or travel predicaments, your experiences will always outweigh the negatives.
