Temple of Dawn

Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan, or Wat Arun, is a popular buddhist temple in the city. It’s riverside location and evening golden lights make it a must see in the city day and night.

The temple was built in the 17th century and originally named Wat Makok. However, construction of the prangs (towers) were completed in the late 18th and 19th century. Wat Arun is also commonly known as the Temple of Dawn, since its name derived from Aruna, the Indian god of dawn. Needless to say, a visit at dawn (or after) is spectacular from across the river. Though, if you want to get up close with Wat Arun, you will have to visit during the day. Find out more below.

Why you should visit Wat Arun

  • Visit a temple from the Ayutthaya period
