Schönbrunn Palace is a beautiful Baroque complex that was once the summer residence home of the Habsburg dynasty. It is located just out of the city centre, easily accessible by public transportation. The name Schönbrunn means “beautiful spring” which comes from a spring discovered near the estate by Emperor Matthias (1557-1619). Construction on the palace began in 1696, replacing the previously destroyed buildings on the estate. Later, it would be redecorated under ruler Maria Theresa (1717-1780).
Today you can tour 45 of the impressive 1441 rooms inside. Including ceremonial and private rooms where you can see the lavish designs, decorations and refurbishments that show Schönbrunn at the height of its glory. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to take pictures inside so it is best to take your time and savour the experience during your tour. In addition, you can walk the palace grounds where there are fountains, statues, gardens and nature trails. Fun Fact: the palace grounds were once hunting grounds!
