If you’re like me then you probably love finding small mementos to remember your past trips. From local products to one-of-a-kind gifts, these are some of the best, cutest and most unique souvenirs on the island. Here’s what to buy in PEI!
The first souvenir on this list is not only totally awesome but also FREE! At both ends of the island are lighthouses and a gift shop (unsurprisingly) where you can collect a ribbon for your visit. After receiving your first ribbon, all you need to do is drive 3 hours to the other side of the island for your tip-to-tip certificate acknowledging your journey across PEI! Note that you can pick up each ribbon at your leisure and it doesn’t matter which ribbon you attain first. Plus if you plan to get your tip-to-tip certificate then there’s no doubt that you’ll see a lot of the beauty that PEI has to offer.
The only time I eat saltwater taffy is in the East Coast and man is it good! There’s just something about that soft, chewy treat that reminds me of childhood. Probably because of the vivid memory of seeing taffy being made in PEI as a kid! You can find taffy all over the island in assorted flavours and textures depending on how it’s made. It’s a great treat to bring home to share a little taste of the East Coast.
I’d say theres a 99% chance that you will try a scoop of Cows ice cream while travelling around Prince Edward Island. It’s just one of those things you do. The ice cream shop originated in PEI and is a sweet stop for locals and tourists. There’s always interesting flavours beyond chocolate and vanilla (not that those aren’t bad!). Thanks to its popularity, you can also buy Cows merchandise like calendars, clothing, plush toys and more. The shirts have funny references relating to movies and pop culture like the Cow Story shirt above. Or you can just stick to the classic Cows logo like I did.
Fridge magnets are actually my go-to souvenir because they’re light and easy to pack. Except for that lobster – but I had to buy it. Magnets are fun too because there are always ones that are unique to the destination and not just a basic picture with the name of the place on it. On my recent trip to the island I saw so many uncommon fridge magnets to buy and we ended up bringing home the lobster and sack of potatoes. I don’t think any explanation is needed here.
I know there are a lot of rock and shell collectors out there so I had to add the red-hued rocks from PEI to this list. Normally I don’t have any interest in bringing rocks and such home because who needs the added weight right? But I actually did bring home a rock from Prince Edward Island because well.. it reminded me of a lobster claw.
Another Earthy element that definitely interests tourists is the red sand that PEI is known for. You could easily bring an empty bottle and fill it up, but you can also buy it in gift shops! This particular sand in a bottle was put together from the Stars of Life Foundation for Autism – support the locals and bring home a souvenir at the same time!
Prince Edward Island has a few interesting choices for those who like to kick back with a drink in hand. The local craft beer was especially enjoyable and I would recommend trying a few if you can. Oddly enough, there are even a few vineyards where you can do a wine tasting – or you can buy it in the PEI Liquor stores. Personally, I wasn’t blown away by the wines so I ended up bringing home a few craft beers and this maple liqueur because it’s so cute that it’s in a maple syrup bottle!
I realize that this might be more of a personal preference but I saw this crocheted potato and fell in love with it. Also it could totally be a gift for a child so there’s that. The other reason why I added it is because I only saw it at one place on the entire island – the Orwell Corner Historic Village. Which makes it rare (haha). I’ll be honest, the village itself wasn’t something to write home about but if we didn’t go, I would’ve never found the cutest souvenir ever.
Local jewelry is a great souvenir because you know you will get use out of it. I saw a lot of unique and minimalistic earrings, necklaces and rings that would look great on anyone. These wooden earrings with the shape of the island on them caught my eye and I’ve been wearing them almost every day since. With this in mind, you can find jewelry in almost every shop and it’s worth checking out.
While shopping for souvenirs in PEI, I came across these waffle hair scrunchies and face towels, among other items. Personally, I love them because that material reminds me of the ocean for some reason, and because I know I’ll use them. I found these at the Tidewater Merchants store in Victoria in a gift bundle!
How could I not mention Anne of Green Gables in a what to buy in PEI post (I almost didn’t). From Anne dolls, books, shirts, magnets, hats, posters, pens, tote bags, and everything in between – she’s everywhere! If you’re a fan of the children’s classic novel then you’ll love Prince Edward Island for sure.
Yes you can totally bring fresh Atlantic shellfish home! Are you a lobster lover, or a fan of mussels, oysters or clams? If so, you don’t want to miss out on this delicious souvenir! Moreover, there are even some merchants who will ship across Canada. Check out where to buy shellfish in PEI here. I haven’t ordered any yet but I’ve been itching to ever since we left – it’s that good.
